apps to customize gnome

There are so many way to customize our desktop, with gnome there so many options.

I use ubuntu karmic koala (9.10) so the commands I’ll present here are for ubuntu, but in general they doesn’t change much for other systems.

First lets see how looks our desk when we just finished install the system.

The desktop is not bat, but not to everybody likes the same thngs, so we start changing things, but what to change? There are basic things that we all do at the very first begining, we change the wallpaper; now ubuntu bring to us more wallpapers than before and that is something good, but still we always want more, so a quick Google search will show us thousand pages where to download wallpapares, i always check first gnome-look and is where generally I get everything I need to personalize my desk.

Also Ubuntu comes with several themes to change the look of our windows, also we can delete or add more panels, etc.

But there’s some apps that are very good that helps us to customize our desktop and make it look better.

So here are some apps to cuztomize our desktop, I will present just a few, there are more out there.

Avant Window Navigator (AWN)

AWN is a dockbar, mac stye, highly customizable.

To install AWN in Karmic just open a Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator awn-manager

Now we have to make AWN load everytime we log in so we have to add it to the startup apps.

System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications .> Add

Screenlets

Los screenlets no son más que pequeñas aplicaciones que podemos colocar en cualquier parte del escritorio, como un reloj, calendario, imágenes, el clima, etc. Para instalarse sólo necesitas abrir, otra vez, una terminal y escribir:

sudo apt-get install screenlets

Para abrir nuestros screenlets sólo vamos a Aplicaciones->Accesorios->Screenlets y listo.

GlobalMenu

Si alguna vez haz trabajado con una mac te habrás dado cuenta que cuando abres alguna aplicación la barra de herramientas se muestra en el panel superior, es algo muy interesante, y a muchas personas les agradará, ya que tendrás un poco más de espacio para tu aplicación, y si estás en una netbook, cualquier ahorro de pixeles es bienvenido.

Aplicaciones->Accesorios->Terminal:

Recuerden que el siguiente código es para karmic (U9.10)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:abhidg/ppa

Ahora ya tenemos el repositorio y la firma digital gpg.

sudo apt-get update

Actualizamos nuestros paquetes y por último

sudo apt-get install gnome-globalmenu

Y listo, tendremos instalado GlobalMenu.

Ahora una rápida muestra de cómo agregarlo.

A nuestro panel superior (lo puedes hacer con otro panel pero obviamente queremos el superior) agregamos GlobalMenu

Luego nos aparecerá una notificación de que activemos el globalmenu

Para activar el Global Menu Plugin, damos clic derecho en el panely luego preferencias

Y activamos las casillas

Y estamos listos. Ahora nuestro panel debería lucir algo como esto:

DockbarX

DockbarX hace que en nuestra barra de aplicaciones en lugar de mostrarnos qué programas tenemos abiertos con sus respectivos nombres, sólo nos muestre los íconos, es bien interesante y bien fácil de utilizar e instalar, hacemos lo siguiente

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:dockbar-main/ppa

Actualizamos

 apt-get update

E instalamos

 aptitude install dockbarx

Es bien simple

Todavía existen muchas más aplicaciones, que en su momento las abordaremos, al igual que en otros posts hablaremos de las que acabamos de mencionar.

Por cierto, hay algo llamado Gnome-do, pero está hecho en mono y mono no, jejeje
